Double Major: Media Communications & Social Psychology

GPA: 3.8/4.0

Attending the University of California, Davis, was a transformative experience that provided me with the courage, skills, and expertise to excel in journalism. Born in the U.S. and raised in Taiwan, I returned to the U.S. at 18, eager to embrace a new chapter in life. The transition was both challenging and exhilarating, and UC Davis offered the ideal environment for my personal and professional growth.

My dual majors in Media Communications and Social Psychology formed a strong foundation for my journalism career. UC Davis' Media Communications program offered a comprehensive curriculum in media production, analysis, and critique. I explored media theory, the societal impact of media, and the ethical considerations inherent in journalism. These courses sharpened my ability to analyze media content, understand audience behavior, and craft compelling narratives that resonate with diverse populations.

Simultaneously, my studies in Social Psychology deepened my understanding of human behavior, social interactions, and the psychological factors influencing media perception. Coursework on social influence, group dynamics, and identity’s role in shaping attitudes proved invaluable in my journalism career, allowing me to approach stories with empathy and a nuanced perspective.

A highlight of my time at UC Davis was engaging in hands-on projects and internships that bridged the gap between theory and practice. Through the campus newspaper, I honed my reporting, writing, and editing skills while covering a range of topics from campus events to local news. These experiences were crucial in building my confidence and preparing me for the fast-paced demands of the journalism industry.

Beyond academics, UC Davis encouraged me to explore my passions through extracurricular activities. I joined student organizations related to media and communication, collaborating with peers on various initiatives. These experiences strengthened my leadership and teamwork skills and provided opportunities to experiment with different forms of media and storytelling.

A significant aspect of my UC Davis experience was immersing myself in a diverse, dynamic community. Adapting to life in the U.S. after spending my formative years in Taiwan required resilience and openness. My eagerness to meet new people, listen to their stories, and engage with a different culture helped me navigate this transition. The inclusive and supportive environment at UC Davis allowed me to build meaningful connections and broaden my worldview.

My time at UC Davis was pivotal in shaping my journalism career. The rigorous academic curriculum, practical experiences, and supportive community equipped me with the tools to thrive in the industry. The skills and knowledge I gained in Media Communications and Social Psychology continue to inform my work, empowering me to tell impactful stories and contribute to meaningful discourse. UC Davis not only prepared me for a successful career but also instilled in me a lifelong passion for learning and storytelling.

Activities & Hobbies

While my goal was always to be in the journalism industry, I made sure to take advantage of the opportunity to study other subjects. I also explored other hobbies like playing guitar, longboarding, cooking, snowboarding, racing go-carts, tennis, billiards, and riding horses.

Sports

I also enjoyed participating in many campus activities. I attended sporting events including basketball, football, even the annual "weiner races!" I also participated in the 5K "color run" for charity.

Exploring the U.S.A

I was blessed to have four years to marvel at the beauty of the west coast. Here is a small collection of pictures I took throughout my time living in California.
