TV Production Intern
Access Sacramento (Channels 17 & 18) | Sacramento, California, U.S.A. January 2015 ~ July 2015
TV Production Intern at "Access Sacramento," a non-profit community station serving the Sacramento area through Channels 17 and 18, as well as on radio.
Videography, Interviewing & Editing
This internship gave me hands-on experience in every part of TV production. It was here I learned how TV magic works behind the scenes and the amount of work it takes for video to get on air, especially live. The first half of this program focused on cameras and videography, with an intense four-week course where I learned how to shoot footage for television. I figured out how to adjust settings for audio and lighting in the field, capture interviews and b-roll, and work with studio cameras to position talent using indoor lighting. I also learned the 180-degree rule, how to set up interview lights, and how to mic people to create high-quality video. By the end of it, I earned a photography certification
Following the photography course is another four-week-long editing course with Final Cut Pro X. I edited the footage I shot and created three segments about local community service efforts that went on air. This experience taught me how shooting and editing work seamlessly together, and I earned my certification as a Final Cut Pro X editor. Skills I transfer to using other editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Edius, and Avid.
Studio Production
The second half of my internship centered on studio production during a six-week course. I had the chance to explore different roles within the studio and production room. As a floor director, I practiced coordinating between talent and control room operators. In the control room, I operated the switcher, selecting effects and transitions between videos under the director’s guidance, and handled audio as a technician during live segments. This hands-on training gave me a deeper understanding of studio operations.
This experience really opened my eyes to the TV industry and gave me the knowledge for a smooth transition into my first professional job in a TV News station. And to top it off, I earned the title of "TV Production Intern of the Year!"
